Joseph Edward Wherry was born on October 9, 1948 in Chicago, Illinois to Edward Joseph Wherry and Eileen Groth. He grew up in Chicago and then moved to Boys Town where he graduated from high school in 1966. As a young boy, Joe began a lifelong affiliation with the Boy Scouts. He recently celebrated his 50 year anniversary. Joe served his country with the United States Navy during the Vietnam War where he received the Purple Heart for being injured during combat.

Joe married his beautiful wife Marcia Smith in 1974. They made their home in Elkhorn, Nebraska where they were blessed with four children: Rebecca, Joseph, Joshua and Jacob. Joe dearly loved his children and grandchildren and treasured the time he could spend with them.

Joe and Marcia worked as family parents at Boys Town for more than a year before he transitioned into insurance sales. Joe struggled with his post war disabilities but they never stopped him from his volunteer work. He was active with St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and Boys Town. Joe was truly dedicated to the Boy Scouts and was a national service officer for the Veteran’s Association, where he could assist veterans in receiving benefits that they were originally denied. He was a fighter, witnessed by his long health battle and a humanitarian witnessed by his relentless volunteerism.

Joe passed away on Wednesday, July 02, 2014 at his home in Elkhorn, with his family at his side, at the age of 65 years, 8 months and 23 days. He was preceded in death by his father Edward Wherry, Foster mother Sophia, brother Mathew Wherry, and his wife Marcia. Joe is survived by his sons Joseph II and his wife Andrea of Elkhorn, Josh and fiance Candice McDonald of Holyoke, Massachusetts, Jacob and his fiance Nicole Kaar of Elkhorn; daughter Rebecca Wherry and her fiance Jose of Slidell, Louisiana; 7 grandchildren; his mother Eileen Groth and sister Marilyn Wherry, both of Olathe, Kansas.
