Robert E. Maddux, '56, passed away on November 21, 2016 in Pahoa, Hawaii.  Lifetime Member, former mayor of Boys Town, Hall of History and Boys Town Alumni Sports Hall of Fame inductee.

Robert E. Maddux, 79, of Pahoa, died November 21, 2016 at home. Born in Iowa, he was raised in Omaha, Nebraska, at Boy’s Town, where he was mayor.

He also was an Eagle Scout, state champion athlete/scholar, U.S. Army veteran, superintendent of schools in California, past president of Eureka California Club, Felix Consent Decree monitor in Hawaii and member of the South Hilo Rotary Club. 

Bob came to Boys Town as a 5th grader. He quickly earned a reputation as a leader, athlete and scholar. During the course of the next eight years he excelled in all three fields. Upon graduation he joined the Army serving until his honorable discharge in 1958. He went on to receive his Bachelor’s Degree from Colorado State and furthered his education at the University of California at Davis. Bob has served children throughout his entire professional life as a speech pathologist, language development specialist.

He was a School Superintendent for the Fort Bragg, Occidental and Laytonville School Districts in Northern California. In addition, he was the Director of Compensatory Education and of Federal and Special Programs for the State of California. Bob has spent his entire adult life in the service of helping children. This is a testament to the legacy of Father Flanagan and Msgr. Wegner. He was a strong supporter of the Boys Town National Alumni Association.

Private services. Survived by wife, Christine, two children and two grandchildren.
