John J. Burgess, Jr., '56, passed away on December 18, 2021 in Kansas City, Missouri.
John Bertran Burgess,84, was born to the union of John Wesley Burgess and Dorothy Elizabeth Taylor on September 3, 1937 at John Gaston Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. His father, John Wesley Burgess, mother, Dorothy E. Croucher Burgess Ford, wife, Juaque Y.Q. Burgess, brother, George Burgess, sister, Thelma Ford, daughter, Yalanda Poole, mother-in-law, Yvonne Hatcher, sister-in-law, Helma Burgess, and niece, Jamie Burgess Bentley all preceded him in death.
John was educated at Our Immaculate Lady School on 6th & Parallel in Kansas City, Kansas. He later furthered his education at Boys Town where he excelled in football and track, he set a record in the high hurdles. John once again relocated to Los Angeles, California where he attended Manual High School graduating in the class of 1957. He was employed by the Economic Opportunity Foundation (EOF) until his health begin to fail. On October 10, 1970 he united in marriage to the former Juaque "Y.Q." King, he assumed the fatherly duties of caring for Yalanda King Poole, Arnetta Young (Gregory) , Rocco B. King (Shelly), Rochelle L. Burgess, Sebastian A. "Sonny" Burgess and James B. Burgess. He was a loving father to children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a U. S. Army Veteran. He lived a long and rich life and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving children, one brother, Frank Burgess; grandchildren, great grandchildren a host of other relatives and friends.
