Nicholas P. Rodriguez, 68, a pillar of the Pueblo and Bessemer community, passed away unexpectedly in his home on June 20, 2012.

Nicholas, a licensed clinical social worker, retired from the Colorado Mental Health Institute of Pueblo. He was currently working at the Pueblo Community Health Center. Nicholas was an avid athlete. He enjoyed exercising, playing basketball, competitively walking, watching sports and reading as well as spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed taking his grandson, Miguel-Angelo, to the movies. He received his high school diploma from Boys Town in Omaha, Neb. He went on to receive his bachelor's degree from Southern Colorado State College and his master's degree in social work from the University of Denver.

His community involvement spanned decades to include a suicide prevention phone line he kept in his own home; his involvement in the 1960s' civil rights movement, which was recognized by Cesar Chavez; his grantwriting ability, which helped to open the YWCA; and his Spanish- speaking ability, which helped to open a bilingual Alcoholics Anonymous. Nicholas was a man of equality and civic engagement.

He was preceded in death by his father, Pablo Rodriguez; and his mother, Refugio Santos Rodriguez. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Margie Lee Rodriguez; his daughters, Michelle Rodriguez (Mark Trujillo) and Paulette Martinez (Rudy Martinez Jr.); his five grandchildren, Natalie, Rudy, Nikki, Natasia and Miguel-Angelo, and his seven siblings, Cipriana Zapata (Ernesto), Ambrose (Cinda) Rodriguez, Carmen Peralta, Carlos (Sue) Rodriguez, Gloria (Domingo) Aguirre, Mario (Alice) Rodriguez and Lupe Quiles-Rosa, as well as a legacy of patients and community members whose lives he enriched in his commitment to community service. Upon his request, cremation has taken place.
