Bo “Albert” Rhudy, age 82, of Brighton, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife Kay “Katie” by his side on Monday, June 24, 2024. Bo attended Boys Town in Omaha, Nebraska, graduating in 1960 and remaining active with Boys Town his entire life.  Bo was born on April 19, 1942 in Augusta, Georgia, the son of Albert and Kathleen Rhudy.

Rhudy attended the University of New Mexico on a swimming scholarship upon graduating from Boys Town. While there, he majored in engineering and was on the Dean’s List and was the recipient of a Rio Grande Steel Scholarship for scholastics and athletics in his senior year. He was also named a collegiate All-American during his swimming career. He spent a number of years as an engineer in the oil and automotive industry before starting his own business, CAMBO, Inc., a manufacturer’s representative business selling plastic raw materials on a commission basis. Over the years, the business grew under Rhudy’s leadership as president and chairman.

He was a Lifetime Member of the Boys Town National Alumni Association and served on the National Board and as a chairman of the Athletic Hall of Fame Committee. He was inducted into the Hall of History as a distinguished alumnus in 2011 and the Boys Town Alumni Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.

He was a true Southern Gentleman. He was a man full of life and laughter, tremendous inspiration, a mentor, and a great example to so many. Bo brought us joy, and he will never be forgotten.  He is survived by his wife Kay, son Brian and brothers James and Edward.  He was predeceased by a daughter, Michelle.

A celebration of life was held on Sunday, June 30th, at 1 p.m. at VFW Hall, known as The American Spirit Center, 10590 East Grand River Brighton, MI. The event was a joyful remembrance of Bo's life, with food and adult beverages served from 1:30 to 5:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, Bo would cherish donations to Boys Town Alumni Scholarship Fund for scholarships at 14188 Mother Teresa Lane, Boys Town, NE 68010.

President's Award - July 2022

trevinoMike Trevino, '58

Mike Trevino is a Boys Town legend and an alumni treasure. He has given his time and talent for more than five decades to supporting the Boys Town National Alumni Association as a board member, officer, reunion coordinator, and jack of all trades. Mike’s boundless energy and his tremendous knowledge have been of immeasurable value to the BTNAA and have contributed to the unqualified success of many reunions.

He and his late wife Carol, a dynamo and powerhouse in her own right, teamed together in keeping Mike’s classmates in touch with each other while Carol served on the board of the BTNAA Auxiliary. For many years running, Mike has organized the reunion golf tournaments. He has dealt with last minute changes and frustrating golf course managers and always brought the event off with great success. In addition to his many faceted efforts on behalf of the Alumni Association Mike has also served on the board of the BTNAA Scholarship Fund providing sound and sage advice in selecting the recipients of scholarships.

Perhaps the most enduring aspect of his life is his strong commitment to his own family and his Boys Town family. He is a man of deep and abiding faith with a strong belief in the goodness of all with whom he comes in contact. It is with a deep sense of gratitude, admiration and respect that we have chosen Mike Trevino to receive the President’s Award to recognize and honor his life-long commitment to the Boys Town National Alumni Association.

The Father Flanagan Distinguished Alumnus Award

Ambrose M. Rodriguez, MSW, MPA, ‘58

Presented July 25, 2015

L-R:  John Abare, '81, Pres. BTNAA, Ambrose Rodriguez, Fr. Steven Boes, National Executive Director, Boys Town   Ambrose Rodriguez is the oldest of three brothers from Pueblo, Colorado to attend Boys Town. After completing high ambrose-rodriguez-father-flanagan-award-2015school he was stationed with the US Army in Germany during the height of the Cold War.  Following his service, he entered the Psychiatric Technician program at Colorado State Hospital in Pueblo, Colorado.  He began his career at the lowest rung in the state Mental Health system and rose to be appointed the Director of the Division of Mental (DMH) for the state of Colorado. Rodriguez was responsible for providing the leadership for 16 community Mental Health Centers and 2 State hospitals in Colorado.  During his tenure as the Director of the Colorado Division of Mental Health, the state achieved significant progress in developing Children Code policies specific to child out-of-home placements. Under Ambrose's' leadership, the Colorado DMH also developed a state inpatient treatment program for violent patients with mental illness.

Rodriguez was appointed the Director of El Centro Mental Health Center in East Los Angeles, California in 1988. He was responsible for providing mental health service for a population of over 100,000, many who only spoke Spanish and were mired in poverty. Under his leadership, mental health programs were developed with the goal of promoting greater family involvement and healthy families.

In 1994 Rodriguez founded the Latino Behavioral Health Institute (LBHI) to specifically address mental health issues in the Latino community. He has served as President of this organization for the 20 years of its existence and developed a board of directors from both the United States and Latino countries.   LBHI provided needed leadership to address the mental health concerns of the Latino community. The LBHI’s mandate is to focus on underserved populations in health, behavioral health and related services by diminishing the stigma and enhancing services to these difficult to reach populations. Under his leadership LBHI addressed health issues and the underserved populations.  Significant accomplishments of his tenure include an annual Latino conference every year focusing on enhancing services to underserved Latino populations in California and across the country; National Roundtables to focus on developing methods to define and assess cultural competency, develop effective training programs and assess efforts in mental health agencies in relation to providing mental health services.

Ambrose Rodriguez has spent his entire adult life in the service of the neediest and underserved populations of his communities.  Like Father Flanagan, he sought to give those without a chance a glimmer of hope and the tools and skills with which to handle the challenges in their daily lives.  He has made his communities better through his selfless and tireless efforts to raise up those around him.  His commitment to bringing light where there is darkness served as a beacon that has led others to take up his quest and, as a result, has improved the conditions of the Latino community and those he served.  Ambrose Rodriguez is highly deserving of this award and reflects great credit upon himself, his community, Boys Town and the Boys Town National Alumni Association.

Rodriguez and his wife Cinda are the parents of five children and they have seven grandchildren.  He was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award in the Advancement of Hispanic Mental Health in 2010 by the National Resource Center at the Shining Light Awards Gala in Los Angeles.  He is a Lifetime Member of the Boys Town National Alumni Association.

Terrance Patrick McBride, '65

obit_terrance_mcbride_600x800Terrance Patrick McBride, '65, passed away on October 18, 2023 in Cleveland, Ohio.

Terrance P. McBride, beloved father, brother, grandfather, and friend, passed away on October 18, 2023. He was born on December 18, 1947, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Florence McBride and John McBride.

Terrance's love for his family knew no bounds. He was a dedicated father who worked tirelessly to provide for his children: Michael McBride, Kristal Maurer, Aaron Kramp (Crystal), Amber Hendzel (Chris), Karlen McBride, Kimberly Bennett (Robert), and Matthew McBride. His devotion as a father extended beyond providing material comforts; he imparted valuable life lessons and provided support to help each of his children become their best selves.

He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren, Nikki, Jeremy, Gina, Kayla, Bobby, Colin, Aurora, Aiden, Cameron, Skye, and Olivia who will always cherish their memories with him. Furthermore, his brother, Michael Clayton and nephew, Brian were a part of his tight-knit family and will dearly miss his presence.

In addition to his parents Terrance was predeceased by his brother, Richard McBride.

Terry had a remarkable journey through life that touched the hearts of all who knew him. A man dedicated to his family and country, he served in the Air Force during his younger years.

One of his favorite hobbies was fishing. There was no place he felt more at peace than casting a line into the water and waiting for the thrill of a tug on the line. Fishing was not just a pastime for Terrance; it was a passion that allowed him to connect with nature and find serenity amidst the chaos of life. Amidst Terry's recent years, an unlikely companion emerged - Tweety. This steadfast feathered comrade will undoubtedly sense Terry's absence keenly. Tweety infused his days with a delightful playfulness, demonstrating that even the toughest of men have a soft spot for a chirping pal. The vivid plumage and merry melodies of Tweety brought a vibrant hue to Terry's world.

Terrance P. McBride will be deeply missed by his loving family.  As we mourn the loss of a remarkable individual, let us also celebrate the joyous moments we shared with Terry and honor the incredible life he lived.

Family and friends are welcome on Monday, October 23, 2023, at 6:00 P.M. at Abrams Creek Baptist Church, 18664 Sheldon Rd., Cleveland, Ohio, 44142.

Monsignor Robert P. Hupp

Third Successor to Servant of God, Father Flanagan | 1973 - 1985

fathe_huppMonsignor Robert P. Hupp made  major changes during his term as Executive Director of Boys Town. During his administration, the Family Home Program replaced dormitories. It’s a system in place today, where children live in homes run by married couples known as Family-Teachers. The homes allow the kids to grow in family environments. The second change came in 1979, when Boys Town began admitting girls. The first girls to graduate from Boys Town did so in 1985.   He began Boys Town’s expansion outside of Omaha by opening  the first site in Tallahassee, Florida.

Monsignor Hupp, a native of Clearwater, Neb., was born on July 3, 1915, the oldest of nine children. After his ordination he served as a Navy Chaplain during World War II and founded the Christ the King Catholic Church in Omaha. On October 11, 1973 he was named the third director of Boys Town.

Monsignor Hupp retired in 1985 after thirteen years of leadership.  He passed away on August 29, 2003 and is buried in Omaha, Nebraska.

Bryan (Donovan Ray Gatus) Monday, '53

obit_bryan_monday_gatus_600x800Bryan (Donovan Ray Gatus) Monday, '53, passed away on September 4, 2025, in Nashville, Tennessee.

Reverend Bryan Monday was born Donovan Ray Gatus on July 10, 1935, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Dorothy Gatus and Ashton Devilla. He was raised by his foster mother, Mrs. Cicero Johnson, and attended Boys Town in Omaha. After graduating from high school, Donovan joined the United States Air Force.

In 1956, Donovan met the petite and beautiful Ethel Louise Osborne, whom he married six months later. He remained in the Air Force, and their oldest daughter, Camela Denice, was born in 1958. As an airman, Donovan’s small family traveled often. They eventually moved to Mt. Clemens, Michigan, where their second daughter, Kamara Jeanette, was born in 1959. Upon leaving the Air Force, the family settled in Indianapolis, Indiana, where their family grew with the births of Roni Collette (1960), Donna Marie (1961), and Sophia Loren (1963).

In 1965, the family moved from Indianapolis to Compton, California, where Donovan opened his own janitorial business. Many fond memories were built during those years. Donovan loved hugging and tickling his daughters, giving them allowances, and enjoying family dinners. During mealtime, he would sit on the couch watching television as his girls brought him his plate of food and Kool-Aid. One of their fondest memories was playing board games together—Donovan was a sore loser who became especially upset when he lost at Monopoly! He also proudly bragged about Ethel’s singing, Roni’s tap dancing, and Lorie’s performing skills.

In later years, Donovan fulfilled his lifelong dream of becoming a disc jockey. In 1972, he moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he established himself in radio, most notably interviewing the Jackson Five and their father before a concert. In 1973, he returned to California and worked at radio station KJLH in Los Angeles, where he hosted a late-night smooth jazz program. His daughters were incredibly proud of him, with his youngest, Lorie, often imitating his voice and smooth-jazz persona
Later in life, Donovan legally changed his name to Bryan Monday. He eventually moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where he met and married his second wife, Virginia, with whom he remained until her passing in 2004. Donovan worked in various roles, including hosting a gospel radio show in Nashville. He remained active and continued working well into his 80s. Donovan had a strong faith in God and instilled in his daughters the importance of regular church attendance. Blessed with good health, he lived to be 90 years old and passed away peacefully on September 4, 2025.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Yolanda Mechelle (1965), who passed away at three months; his only son, Arturo DaNaire, who was born prematurely and passed the day of his birth; his first wife, Ethel Louise Gatus; his second wife, Virginia Monday; his youngest daughter, Sophia Loren Gatus; and two grandsons, Arturo Da’Naire Frazier and Antwain Sherrod Scott.

Cherishing his memory are his daughters Camela McClain (Floyd), Kamara Stewart (Darcy Dean), Roni Gatus, and Donna Thrash (Victor). Donovan was blessed with 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters, Hallye Gooden of Kansas City, Missouri, Jewel Mitchell, and Beverly Paden of Denver, Colorado, as well as his biological mother, Dorothy Gatus-Mitchell, who is 104 years old at the time of this obituary’s publication.
